Neeraj Mittal, IAS (1992 batch, Tamil Nadu cadre) has assumed charge as the new Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, marking a key leadership transition in the energy sector. He takes over from Shri Pankaj Jain as part of a major administrative reshuffle across senior positions.
Shri Mittal brings a distinguished track record across multiple domains of governance. Prior to this role, he served as Secretary, Department of Telecommunications (DoT), where he steered national initiatives in digital connectivity, telecom reforms, and infrastructure expansion. His leadership at the State level includes serving as Principal Secretary (Information Technology), Government of Tamil Nadu, CMD, TUFIDCO, and MD & CEO, Guidance Tamil Nadu, where he played a central role in investment facilitation and industrial development.
His earlier stint as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas adds valuable sectoral insight, strengthening his understanding of the energy ecosystem, policy priorities, and operational frameworks.
Beyond his administrative work in India, Shri Mittal has also contributed internationally as Senior Advisor at The World Bank Group, engaging in digital governance and global development strategies.
An alumnus of IIT Kanpur with a strong foundation in electrical engineering, Shri Mittal is recognized for his structured, data-driven approach to public policy and programme execution. His leadership is expected to support the Ministry in advancing strategic energy initiatives, bolstering sectoral reforms, and reinforcing India’s long-term economic and sustainability goals.
